In the complex of problems that are now being actively studied by Russian and foreign historians, the meaning, history of the formation and significance of the Soviet federative model remain one of the central ones. Along with the well-known impressive baggage of Soviet historical literature on this subject, a very significant number of works were published after 1991, which for the most part consider this model in the context of all other areas of Soviet ethno-national policy. The article analyzes the most significant developments of domestic and foreign scientists who are able to clarify the event series and the content of the process of federal construction in Soviet Russia as the largest and most complex union republic of the Soviet Union.
